Why should I insure my pet?

We Brits are famous for how fond we are of our four-legged friends. They're part of the family

They seem to know when we’re feeling blue, they help us keep fit as we run around after them, and they can help us de-stress too. Above all, they’re one of the family.

So if they need care because they’re ill or have an accident, we want the best for them.

Pet insurance is there to help spread the cost of caring for your pet, if they need some professional TLC. That means you don’t have to worry about the financial side of it, just about helping your pet get better.

IT ALL STACKS UP

Did you know that typical vet's fees can run to hundreds of pounds. And often pets need ongoing treatment. That's when the costs can really stack up.

And it's not just vet's bills you might have to worry about. You could get stung by a bill for damage caused by your dog, or have to fork out for advertising and rewards if your pet goes missing. Plus kennel or cattery costs if you get hospitalised by illness and can't look after them. Pet insurance can help with all of these things.

PET INSURANCE TAILS

Sorry about the pun. But the following true stories illustrate how having pet insurance in place can make sure even the saddest pet's tale has a happy ending.

Kate and Garfield the cat

When our cat, Garfield, was run over, he suffered a broken jaw, nose, leg and got some quite severe infections. In total the vet's fees came to over £900. Because we had pet insurance, we didn't have to pause to think about the cost, we just told the vet to get on with it. Garfield made a full recovery - he's now back to his playful self and at the age of 16 he's still causing mischief.

Elaine and Cass the Lurcher

When my first dog Pep had terminal cancer, I had to take out a loan to cover the bills - over £2,000. When Cass was diagnosed too her vet's fees came to more than £3,600 – but she was insured. This time I didn’t have to worry about the money so all my attention could go on looking after her, which ultimately helped her fight the cancer longer. Given only 12 months to live, even with treatment, Cass lived for two more happy years - proving to me that there’s more to pet insurance than just paying the bills.
